The man is hesitant, but the crocodile promises not to eat him if he helps. After being freed, the crocodile immediately tries to eat the man. The man protests, so they agree to ask the first three creatures they meet whether the crocodile is being fair. They ask a tree, a water buffalo, and finally a rabbit (or monkey, in some versions). The rabbit cleverly tricks the crocodile into going back into the trap to “demonstrate” how he was originally caught.
